Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dog in England and America, as their sweet, calm nature and friendly, tolerant attitude makes them fabulous family pets and their intelligence means that they make highly capable working dogs.
The Golden Retriever was developed at the highland estate of Lord Tweedmouth in Scotland, who wanted an excellent hunting dog, who would also be a loyal companion and family dog. He started mixing different breeds from 1835 and his breeding records show that by the late 1800's he had almost reached his goal. The Golden Retriever was officially recognised as a breed by the Kennell Club in 1911, being known as a "Retriever - Yellow or Golden" and in 1920 it was officially changed to "Golden Retriever".
These days they are used for retrieving game for hunters and they sniff and track contraband for law enforcement. They are also excellent therapy and guide dogs.
