The Muppets were conceived by Jim Henson in 1954-1955. Kermit the Frog first appeared in a TV program called Sam and Friends, although he originally looked more like a lizard!
The Muppets came into their own on The Muppet Show which ran from 1976 until 1981. Kermit the Frog was the harrassed stage manager of the Muppets variety show. The program also showed the goings-on behind the scenes including the romance between Kermit and Miss Piggy.
