Does the name Winnipeg ring a bell? It's a great teddy bear story. Winnipeg the black bear was born in 1914 in Canada. She was looked after by a Lieutenant from the Canadian cavalry regiment and came to Britain with him. When the regiment left Britain Winnipeg needed a home and was adopted by London Zoo.
At London Zoo a certain young boy developed a special affection for the bear. That boy was Christopher Robin, son of the author A.A.Milne and the bear was immortalised in his children's stories as Winnie the Pooh!
Winnipeg has been produced as an ornament to commemorate 100 years since her birth. She is made from the finest black mohair, with a brown muzzle. Her arms are jointed and she has a loop so she can be hung up. She is delivered in a Steiff box with numbered certificate of authenticity and bears the Steiff gold-plated button in ear with special elephant motif for 2014.
